Cloud and Precipitation Formation

With ARC polarimetric radars and the NCAR-developed TITAN/CIDD radar product generation and display software, hydrometeors in clouds and precipitation cells can be uniquely identified so that research areas related to cloud microphysics and precipitation formation can be studied in methods that were previous impossible. Specific research fields, such as mixed-phase microphysical processes in clouds, can be assessed. Through the expertise of CEO Dr. Roelof Bruintjes, ARC has access to decades of experience investigating the processes that go into cloud and precipitation formation, as well as the applications related to cloud seeding.

Dual-polarization radar has facilitated the detection of specific particles within clouds and storms which were unattainable with standard Doppler radars. Research of cloud and precipitation formation is significantly aided by the polarimetric Hydrometeor Particle Identification algorithm (HPID) and the Radar Echo Classifier (REC), both of which are part of TITAN/CIDD software that is the product of decades of research and operational use around the planet. Dual-polarization radars detect erroneous reflectivity returns, such as ground clutter, anomalous propagation, sea clutter and man-made artifacts in radar measurements, allowing for this data to be removed for higher quality research.
